Our Story

A quiet devotion to the painted line

“Every canvas begins in silence — a prepared cloth, a mineral pigment, a single first stroke.”

Monalisa Art & Crafts is a studio rooted in Odisha’s living tradition of Pattachitra and screen painting. Our master artisans have inherited techniques passed down through generations — grinding pigments from stone and shell, treating cloth with tamarind paste, and drawing every line by hand.

What we make is neither mass-produced nor decorative filler. It is handcrafted excellence — patient, precise, and unmistakably human.

How We Create

Inside the atelier

Every piece moves through four unhurried stages, guided by hand from first stroke to final varnish.

  1. Step 01
    Preparing the cloth

    Cotton is treated with tamarind seed paste and layered with chalk until it holds pigment like paper.

  2. Step 02
    Grinding the pigments

    Minerals, conch shell and lamp black are hand-ground to natural colour — no synthetic dyes.

  3. Step 03
    Drawing every line

    Our masters draw each figure freehand with a fine squirrel-hair brush. No stencils, no prints.

  4. Step 04
    Sealing the work

    A final wash of lacquer preserves the painting for generations.
